Type B Mom’s Guide to Christmas (No Overwhelm)
If how quickly Christmas is coming is stressing you out rather than lighting you up, you are not alone. For the Type B moms (hi, hello, welcome), this season can be a confusing blend of wanting to do all the things, yet also feeling like you just cannot add one more thing to the to do list.
This guide is for the dreamers, the creative spirits, the neurodivergent mamas, and the ones who thrive on a little bit of last minute choas. Let’s talk about doing the holidays differently—with less stress and more softness. Here’s how to make the season feel special without feeling the need to become an entirely different type of person
1. Choose Your Own Traditions
You don’t need to adopt every holiday tradition to be a “good mom.” Pick one or two simple things that make sense for your family and let those be enough. Maybe it’s a waffle breakfast on December 1 (try my go-to recipe here!), buying a specific brand of advent calendar, driving around looking at lights with PJs on. There are so many to chose from, and truthfully the ones that are going to cause YOU the least amount of stress are going to be the ones with the biggest impact.
Practical to do: Sit down with your husband (like ASAP) and chat about what is most important to you as a family for this season! Pick 1-2 traditions to prioritize
2. Simplify Gifting with a Loose Formula
Gifts can feel overwhelming fast, especially if you’re prone to overthinking. Make yourself an easy formula to follow for the kids gifts: something they need, something they want, something to read. It keeps things intentional, budget-friendly and easy to remember.
Have open + honest conversations with friends and family members about what gifting looks like in this season and be okay with not needing to get every single person in your life a gift. Hand written cards are always a great way to show appreciation and mean a lot in this busy season.
Practical to do: Actually schedule time in your calendar to buy gifts, whether that means a kid free Saturday at the mall or an online shopping evening.
3. Give Yourself Permission to Opt Out
You’re allowed to not do the things. No Elf on the Shelf? Great. Not hosting a dinner party this year? Totally fine.
One thing that has been helpful for me is to pre-plan the MOST important events (ex. anything that is family related) and then evaluate everything else based on capacity. This is a month where I have to continually remind myself of what my priorities are and who is most important to me to make time for. If I am so busy and overwhelmed I am not able to be a present mom, that is when things do not feel aligned for me.
4. Romanticize the Everyday Moments
This is something I am SO passionate about, especially this time of year. No one else is creating the holiday magic for you. No one is going to stop you from doomscrolling every single night instead of cozying up and watching a Christmas movie or baking. It is up to you to LEAN IN to this season and make it magical, for both you and your kids. If you need some ideas to get you started, here are 50 ways to make the season feel magical again.
To-do today: Take the time to make the hot chocolate, light the candles, automate your Alexa to play christmas Jazz every day at 5pm
You don’t need to change who you are
You don’t need to be a different kind of mom who has it all together. You just need to be present and willing to let go of the pressure to do it all.
Here’s to a slow, joy-filled Christmas—the Type b way 🤍
