If you continually get to the end of the day and feel so overwhelmed, stressed & like you accomplished nothing, I get it. If you get to the end of the week, and wonder how another one has already passed, yet you still feel like you have accomplished nothing, I have been there!! The reason why you never finish your to do list is not for the reason your brain might initially jump to.
Chances are, it isn’t because you are lazy (even though you might feel like it)
The issue is usually HOW you are creating and managing your tasks.
If you are a fellow adhd / type b girlies I want you to hear this: you are not lazy, and yes you can learn how to manage your tasks properly
I do a full deep dive into daily planning here, but I want to focus on two key mistakes that you are probably making.
Mistake #1: You are treating your brain dump like a to-do list
I want you to hear me out. I am a major fan of brain dump. There is something *needed* for us adhd girls to put pen to paper and get all the thoughts out. The issue is when you stop there. You cannot just create a brain dump of all the things and then use that as a to-do list. The key with a brain dump is to guide you on creating tasks for yourself. If you are skipping the step of breaking it down, you will NEVER feel like you are accomplishing anything.
KEY TAKEAWAY: Yes, do a brain dump, but make sure you take the time to break this down smaller into actual tasks.
If you operate off a 100 item to-do list, you will never feel like you accomplish anything
Mistake #2: You are time blind
If you are anything like me (which, if you are hanging out in this corner of the internet, you might be), you may struggle with the ability to mesure time well. One of my lovely adhd symptoms is a very lacking intetnal clock. If you also struggle with this, YOU GET IT.
When it comes to being productive and working off a to-do list, this can be hard for us, because we are setting unrealistic expectations for ourselves.
I want to remind you that even if you have adhd, this is a SKILL that can be learned. We don’t want to let our mental health control us, we want to be continually learning and working on the things that are hard for us.
KEY TAKEAWAY: If you have anyone in your life that you know is good with time + being realistic, this is the person you want to help you with this. As you are planning your day and your week, ask them their opinion! Have them help you determine what is going to be actually feasible for you to do in one day!
REMINDERS
My hope with sharing these things is to inspire you to identify some of the areas that you may be struggling and give reason to them! I find this so helpful, not to give excuse to the behaviour but rather to bring awareness to them. If I constantly tell myself “I just never get anything done” that is forming an idea about myself that is SO much different than “I am working on being more realistic with my expectations on myself”. The goal here is not to be soft or hard on ourselves, but rather challenge our brains to grow and adapt as we learn new skills!
If you’ve been thinking about starting a podcast, this is your sign! Or honestly, if there’s any creative project you’ve been putting off — something that’s been sitting on your heart for a while — this is for you too!! I am a classic multi passionate adhd girly, who has waaay too many ideas, and […]
