I will be honest, I thought the influencers might be overhyping the Brick.
In the past years, I have tried different things to help break my phone addiction. In some seasons I have tried to leave my phone behind when I go out. I have used the built-in screen time reminders. However, I would always find a way to scroll, especially in the evenings. One of my goals has been to get un-addicted to my phone, so I was very interested when I first hear about this new phone tool called the “Brick”
When I started seeing some of my favourite influencers talk about the Brick, I thought it would be similar to my experiences before, where it was something that *kind of* worked, but wouldn’t fully pull be away from my phone. How different could this Brick really be?
Here is my honest, real-life review!
WHAT IS THE BRICK?
The Brick is a physical phone lock device that helps you block distracting apps, without deleting them from your phone.
Here is how it works:
You choose which apps you want to block
You physically tap your phone to the Brick
All those apps are instantly blocked
You can still text, call + use any apps you have deemed your essential apps
The only way to unblock yourself from the apps is by physically tapping the Brick again!
As a mom, I don’t feel comfortable leaving my phone at home (or turning it all the way off) for safety reasons. And as a content creator, I have *so many* drafts on my social media apps which makes it tricky to delete them. Having the option to not have to delete any apps, but also be present as a mom and not have that temptation to scroll has been a game changer.
Yes, 100%. It is so different than anything else! From the first day I used Brick, it felt so different (and honestly, so much better) than I expected. I assumed it would feel similar to Screen Time or app limits — but it doesn’t. The experience is completely different.
Here’s what made it worth it for me:
• I still have full access to the parts of my phone I actually need I can text, call, use my camera, access my camera roll, maps, and essentials — without the constant temptation to open social media. I’m not cut off from my phone, I’m just protected from mindless scrolling (it is SCARY how easy it is to default to all the social apps)
• The physical device changes everything Needing the actual Brick to lock and unlock my apps makes a huge difference. That physical action creates a pause, and to be honest, if I am already in bed and my phone is bricked, having to walk all the way to the kitchen is way more of a choice than just tapping a button on my phone to allow me to access Instagram
I’ve tried iPhone Screen Time, app limits, and deleting Instagram and TikTok on weekends. Deleting apps used to work really well for me, until I started creating content more regularly. Once I had drafts saved in my apps, deleting them became a whole process and honestly made things more complicated.
I mostly use Brick on weekends to fully disconnect from social media and in the evenings to be more present at home with my toddler.
For this season of life, as a mom who works from her phone, Brick has been more than worth it to keep my boundaries in place that I aspire for myself.
CAN YOU SHARE A BRICK WITH SOMEONE?
Yes! So thankful for this. My husband and I share one Brick, and it’s honestly made our evenings better. We keep it on the fridge (it’s magnetic, which I didn’t even realize at first), and we both use it at night.
Since we have started locking our phones in the evenings:
We talk more before bed
We have played more games / watched more shows together instead of both just doing our own thing
We’re not half-scrolling while spending time together
MY FINAL THOUGHTS ON THE BRICK:
Some reasons you might want to try a Brick.
You’re a mom that wants to be more present with your kids
You want to spend more intentional time with your husband and friends
You work from your phone and need realistic boundaries
You’ve tried Screen Time and it didn’t stick
You want intentional phone use, not mindless scrolling
You want to be in nature, have access to your camera, but nothing else
For most of us, we don’t need to give up social media completely, we just need to be more intentional with how often we are using it!
